As the son of an antique dealer, Al Heller enjoyed a rather unconventional introduction to the world of music. Growing up surrounded by a bewildering array of dusty old musical instruments, from lutes, harps & zithers to pianolas, hurdy-gurdies & church organs, he spent much of his childhood simply experimenting with sound.
Developing a passion for avant-garde & electronic music, Al went on to serve a long musical apprenticeship, composing, recording & regularly performing on the UK live circuit with a diverse range of acts from punk to jazz.
Switching to the other side of the musical fence during the late eighties, Al landed his first studio job at Polygram in London. In 1994, he began freelancing at the newly-formed Music Choice and has been actively involved with the creation & programming of their music channels ever since.
Alongside programming stints with many other major broadcasters, such as MTV, Al has also worked extensively throughout the industry in a wide range of roles from audio engineering to compiling albums & penning sleevenotes.
